How much sleep do I need is a very important question as most people do not get the proper amount of sleep. Sleep is very important for the body and brain and without enough sleep you can have health issues and your body will not function properly. You also will increase your chance of having an accident as your senses will not be alert.
Sleep allows your brain and body to regenerate and recharge. Think of this time like recharging a set of batteries except that it is you that is recharging. Scientists have mapped brain activity and those that get plenty of sleep and are rested show a lot of activity in the temporal lobe. Individuals that are tired do not show this activity and it is known that the temporal lobe processes language. So when you are rested you have an easier time learning new tasks and remembering things.
Not enough sleep will also have other health issues as it impairs glucose tolerance as well as raising your blood pressure and affects your nervous system. These affects will damage your health in the long term. Research on sleep deprivation is tricky as research can only be done for a short amount of time as it is too damaging to the individual.
