How Adjusting Your Office Chair Could Stop Back Pain

If you work in an office and spend most of your day at the computer, it is likely that you are experiencing neck or back pain from slouching to view the screen. Stress in the back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs in particular can be created through sitting for long periods of time in a static position. It is therefore essential to ensure that you are in a comfortable position before you resume your work.

The natural tendency for people to slouch or become hunched over in their chairs can overstretch the spinal ligaments and strain the discs and surrounding structures in the spine. Over time, this incorrect sitting posture caused by workplace ergonomics can permanently damage spinal structures and cause recurrent back pain.

This can all be avoided, however, with an ergonomic office chair. When used properly this chair helps maximise back support and maintain good posture while sitting. This needs to be adjusted to the correct proportions of the user’s body to improve comfort and reduce stress to the lower back and neck.

To adjust your chair correctly, you should sit as close as possible to your desk so that your upper arms are parallel to your spine. Rest your hands on the work surface so that your elbows are at a 90 degree angle. After doing this check that your thighs can still easily fit under the desk.

Press your bottom into the very back of the chair so that you are making full use of the chairs back support. Keep your back upright and don not slump or slouch in your chair at any time as this will cause stress to the lower back.

Your gaze should now be aimed at the centre of the computer screen. If your screen is higher or lower than your gaze you should adjust this to avoid neck strain.

Though this is not a miracle solution, by improving your posture it could significantly reduce back strain and therefore any chances you have at developing lower back pain.
