Buying a New Mattress is Like Taking Vitamins
Everyday technology is getting better in almost every industry. The mass majority of people are constantly buying the newest gadgets, phones, HD televisions and cars; yet many people forget just how important a quality mattress can effect your health and add benefit to your life.
As we continue to become busier in our everyday lives, sleep seems to have become the new sex, the thing everyone wants more of but isn’t getting enough. Sleep experts agree that most adult humans function best on 8.5 hours of sleep per night, while the average actual sleep habits are slightly less than 6.8 hours. Common reasons for this include not being able to fall asleep, restless sleeping throughout the night, and lack of time in a day. The whole story is not in quantity, but rather in quality.
This lack of sleep has flamed the mattress industry to begin campaigns such as Sealy who claim to help “get a better 6 hours”. Of course, they are right in the idea that a more restful sleep will lead to additional energy the next day. What is striking however is that more people are not purchasing quality mattresses when the time comes due. No doubt you will upgrade a television to HD, buy the latest from your favorite car manufacturer, but buying a new mattress? New mattresses however seem to be in a constant state of procrastination.
Sure it might cost a couple thousand dollars for a new quality mattress, but there are payment plans available in almost any mattress store. This is often a big factor since people assume they need an upfront lump sum which they simply do not have the cash flow to compensate.
People are living more stressful lives and sleep is considered a prime stress reducer. A lack of sleep causes a myriad of problems including negative effects on memory, cognitive skills, digestion and immune deficiencies. Although sleep has remained somewhat of a mystery to us throughout the years, modern research is making great leaps in understanding the complexities involved in quality sleep. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is one of five sleep cycles in sleep which serves a significant role in feeling rested and locking in memories from your previous wake. Sleep goes through 5 cycles, from light (almost wakeful) to a deep sleep, hitting REM after an average of 90 minutes, then restarts its cycle. Through course of the night, the cycle becomes more rapid with increases in the amount of REM per hour of sleep.
Interruptions to this cycle can cause a delay in reaching REM and will often leave the person desiring more sleep when it is time to wake up. Problems that stem from lack of sleep will be more likely the next day which increases the risk of getting sick from immune deficiencies as well as weight gain from metabolism slow down. All of this from a poor mattress!
When it all boils down, sleep functions to keep you healthy physically and mentally. Finding a way to have better sleeps will boost your mood and keep you mentally and physically healthier. If you are having trouble finding the time to get enough sleep, do yourself a favor and buy a quality bed. If you are looking to increase your quality of life, a new mattress is likely the best bang for your buck!
